Book III develops the account of mind and soul as bodily and mortal. Lucretius does not merely declare that invisible things are unreal. He treats mental life as real while explaining it through a particularly fine bodily constitution. The issue is what sustains thought and sensation, rather than whether they occur at all.
Among his arguments, the effects of wine and disease on mental activity show the soul's vulnerability to bodily influences. He treats this susceptibility to disruption as evidence against an indestructible soul. The inference forms part of a larger case for mortality, rather than a deduction from the word material alone. His ultimate bodies are material but do not, within the theory, share the mortality of compounds.
That distinction blocks an easy but invalid summary: everything material dies, therefore the soul dies. The relevant argument concerns the soul's particular constitution and dependence on bodily organization. One can question whether susceptibility to disturbance establishes eventual dissolution without denying the disturbances he describes. Disagreement should target that inferential step, rather than replace his reasoning with an easier argument he does not need.
Consider a deliberately limited analogy. If an instrument's performance changes when its working conditions change, that gives us reason to investigate dependence on those conditions. It does not, by itself, settle every question about what the instrument is. The same logical caution applies when evaluating Lucretius's movement from bodily effects to a conclusion about the soul. The analogy illustrates evidential dependence, not a claim that a person is simply an instrument.
