The Brihadaranyaka 4.4.5–7 connects action with what a person becomes. It links desire, resolve, deed, and the consequences that follow. It also distinguishes the condition of one moved by desire from the freedom associated with desire for the self and the undoing of binding desires. The discussion joins the question of selfhood to an account of action and return to embodied existence.
This is part of the textual basis for discussing karma and liberation. Karma concerns action and its consequences; here the consequences extend beyond one familiar lifespan. Liberation concerns release from that binding condition. These are substantive metaphysical teachings. They should not be silently translated into the observation that repeated actions in a stable context can become habitual, even though that observation can provide a limited modern analogy.
A moral objection now becomes pressing. If selfhood is ultimately connected with a reality beyond individual difference, who bears responsibility for particular acts? The text's attention to conduct shows that it does not simply discard ethical distinctions. But the claim of ultimate unity does not by itself supply a complete account of consent, justice, or obligations between persons. A contemporary application has to explain how those distinctions retain their force.
For example, someone could claim that shared reality makes another person's boundary unimportant. That inference would be unwarranted. A claim about an ultimate ground does not by itself confer permission to act on another person. Recognizing a common basis and respecting particular responsibilities can be compatible, but their compatibility needs argument. It cannot be secured by repeating an identity formula.
