- Immanuel Kant, Critique of Practical Reason (1788; online Thomas Kingsmill Abbott translation). Read the preface's account of freedom with Book I, chapter 1, on the fundamental law and fact of reason.
- In the same work, Book I, chapter 3, develops moral motivation and respect. Book II develops the highest good, the postulates, and the primacy of practical reason. Keeping these stages separate helps preserve their different roles.
