The visitor's central move is to understand a relevant sense of non-being through difference. Motion is not rest, although motion exists. Motion is also different from Being itself, although it participates in being. Saying that it "is not" in one respect need not cancel the respect in which it is (Sophist 256a–257a).
This can be confusing because the same words perform different jobs. "Motion is not Being itself" denies an identity. "Motion is" attributes being to motion. The first proposition does not contradict the second. A book can similarly exist without being identical with existence, though that ordinary illustration does not establish Plato's metaphysical account of participation.
At 257b–c, the visitor explains that a negative need not signify the contrary of what follows it. Something not large might be small, but it might also be equal in size to the comparison object. The negative leaves more than one possibility available. It distinguishes the thing from the character denied without forcing it into one particular opposite.
A contemporary example is a report that calls a proposal "not approved." That leaves open whether it was rejected, deferred, or never considered. Replacing the phrase with "rejected" adds information the negative alone does not supply. The example illustrates the logical caution; Plato is discussing large, equal, and small, not administrative decisions.
Still, the slogan "not means different" needs care. Suppose someone says, "Theaetetus is not wise." It would be inadequate to explain this merely by observing that Theaetetus is not numerically identical with Wisdom. A wise person would also differ from Wisdom itself. An account of predication must concern whether a character applies to its subject, rather than confusing that question with the identity of two objects.
This is why the earlier discussion of combination matters. Difference allows the visitor to articulate exclusions within what is. It does not make every arbitrary difference an adequate explanation of every negative statement. The argument concerns structured relations among kinds and their applications, not a license to replace all negatives mechanically with a single phrase. Reading 254b–259e alongside the later account of discourse at 261d–264b helps keep these relations distinct.
