  • Arthur Schopenhauer, The World as Will and Idea, Volume I, translated by R. B. Haldane and J. Kemp. This historical translation renders Vorstellung as “idea”; this chapter uses “representation.” Begin with §§1–2, then §§18–23 on the body and will, §§34–38 and §52 on art, and §§56–71 on suffering, compassion, and renunciation.
  • Return to §18 alongside §19 to distinguish the bodily identification from the extension to other phenomena. Read §58 alongside §§66–69 to compare the argument about satisfaction with the ethical response it is supposed to motivate.
