A good prompt typically has three elements:
1. A Clear Task
What do you want the model to do? Instead of "dogs," try "Explain why dogs make good family pets." The more specific the task, the more focused the response.
2. Relevant Context
What information does the model need to complete the task well? This might include your audience ("for parents of young children"), constraints ("in 3-4 sentences"), or requirements ("using simple language").
3. Format Guidance
How should the response be structured? Do you want a paragraph, a list, a table, or step-by-step instructions? Specifying the format helps ensure you get output you can use.
You won't always need all three elements. Sometimes a simple, direct question works perfectly. But when you're not getting the results you want, these three elements give you a framework for improving your prompt.
Think of it like ordering at a restaurant. You could just say "food," but you'll get better results if you specify what kind of food (the task), any dietary restrictions or preferences (the context), and how you want it prepared (the format). The more guidance you provide, the more likely you'll get exactly what you want.
