Imagine you tell a system: "Schedule a meeting with Sarah next Tuesday at 2 PM and send her the agenda."

A chatbot would respond:

To schedule a meeting with Sarah:

1. Open your calendar application
2. Create a new event for next Tuesday at 2 PM
3. Add Sarah as an attendee
4. Draft an email with the agenda
5. Send the email to Sarah

Would you like help with anything else?

Helpful, sure. But you still have to do all the work.

An AI agent would:

  1. Check your calendar for availability on Tuesday at 2 PM
  2. Check Sarah's calendar (if it has access) to confirm she's free
  3. Create the calendar event and add Sarah as an attendee
  4. Retrieve or generate the meeting agenda based on context
  5. Compose an email with the agenda
  6. Send the email to Sarah
  7. Confirm back to you: "Done! Meeting scheduled with Sarah for Tuesday at 2 PM. Agenda sent."

See the difference? The agent perceived your goal, decided on a sequence of actions, used multiple tools (calendar, email), and completed the task autonomously.
