The survival framework uses incomplete observations. Under the right censoring assumptions, the likelihood weights an event record by the density and a censored record by the survival function , the probability of surviving past that time. It retains censored follow-up instead of discarding those records.
A second advantage is that the framework accepts data exactly as it is collected. Subjects can have different observed durations. They observe until an administrative cut-off, until a subject drops out, or until an event occurs, whichever comes first. The pair , the observed duration and a binary event indicator, is a faithful representation of what we know, and modern estimators can consume this representation directly.
A third advantage is interpretation. A continuous-time hazard is an event rate per unit time among subjects who are still event-free. Survival probabilities answer finite-horizon questions such as the probability that a functioning pump fails within the next month. These are related quantities, but a rate is not itself a probability. A valid survival model respects the support of durations; unconstrained linear predictions of a raw duration can, for example, become negative.
Survival models also extend to covariates and time-varying effects. When the target distinguishes competing terminal event types, retain an event-type indicator and define the target, such as a cause-specific hazard or cumulative incidence. A prespecified composite first-event target can use a binary indicator; recurrent or nonterminal events may need another formulation. The binary pair alone does not encode those distinctions.
