To achieve optimal results with K-means clustering, follow several key practices. First, always standardize your data before applying K-means, as the algorithm is sensitive to feature scales due to its reliance on distance calculations. Use multiple initializations (setting n_init greater than 1) to avoid poor local optima and ensure more stable clustering outcomes. When evaluating clustering results, do not rely solely on inertia, since this metric decreases monotonically as the number of clusters increases. Instead, combine inertia with other evaluation methods such as silhouette analysis for a more complete assessment.

Use the k-means++ initialization method, as it typically leads to better clustering performance compared to random initialization. For reproducibility, always set the random_state parameter to ensure consistent results across different runs. When assessing cluster quality, compare the silhouette score and inertia, then interpret them using domain knowledge. Consider the characteristics of your data: K-means performs best when clusters are roughly spherical and of similar size.
