Grokking shows that overfitting and generalization are not always separate phases. A model can memorize for many steps and then generalize later, so early stopping can hide useful behavior. The loss surface contains many possible solutions, and gradient descent reaches different ones depending on the path it takes. Regularization shapes that path, and understanding how it does so is key to designing training procedures that reliably find generalizing solutions.

Grokking also raises a question that recurs throughout the remaining chapters: what does it mean for a model to understand something rather than perform well on a benchmark? A grokking-capable model that has discovered the circular structure of modular arithmetic has a compact internal representation and structural generalizability that its memorizing counterpart lacks, even if their training accuracies are identical. In this controlled setting, grokking lets us observe and measure the difference between those solutions directly.
